Clarification
of Protection of Human Subjects Test Requirement
In
the May, 2001 issue of the newsletter, it was reported that the IUPUI
Faculty Council approved a requirement for all researchers to pass the
Protection of Human Subjects Test. It should be noted that this requirement
includes all investigators, co-investigators and sub-investigators involved
in the conduct, design, and reporting of the research who are listed in
the summary safeguard statement of the IRB packet.

Utilizing
Updated IRB Forms
The adoption of new IRB policies and
requirements often necessitates returning outdated forms to the investigator
for correction and may result in delays. As IRB forms are frequently updated,
investigators are reminded to check the Research Compliance Web site at
http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/download.htm
for updated forms each time new items are submitted to the IRB.
Submission
of the Same Protocol by a Different Investigator
The
IRB will not routinely accept for review protocols that are essentially
the same study submitted by a different investigator. Investigators are
urged to collaborate with one another and submit one protocol for review
by the Board. Questions or requests for exceptions regarding this policy
should be directed to the IUPUI/Clarian IRB Chair: send an e-mail to resrisk@iupui.edu
or call 274.8289.

Additional
IRB Requirements for VA-Funded Studies Involving Human Subjects

Clarian Health Partners. Additional IRB requirements for VA-funded studies
require completion of Section 3 of the IRB Continuing Review Form.

Routing
of Electronic Proposals
Indiana University policy requires that all
proposals for externally sponsored projects must be routed though the
University in order to obtain proper review, approval and signature. (See
Institutional Policy III-20 at http://www.indiana.edu/~vpcfo/policies/contract/iii-20.html.)
As funding agencies develop systems that allow proposals to be submitted
electronically it is easy to lose sight of the routing procedure, especially
when funding agencies appear to be encouraging individuals to submit proposals
directly to the agency.
