Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education Featured as Panelist
for March 19 NCURA Videoconference
Mark L. Brenner, Vice Chancellor for Research
and Graduate Education, IUPUI, will participate as a panelist for the
NCURA Videoconference program, From a Culture of Compliance to a Culture
of Concern: Building a Compliance Education Program That Works on March
19, 2002. As a panelist, Brenner will provide input as a university research
administrator regarding creating effective research education initiatives.

Research and Sponsored Programs has registered
the IUPUI campus for the series of live satellite videoconferences sponsored
by The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA)
and invites all who are interested to attend. The next program in this
series, From a Culture of Compliance to a Culture of Concern: Building
a Compliance Education Program That Works, will be March 19, 2002, 11:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the University Library - Lilly Auditorium, Lower

Criteria for Maximum Blood
Draws
The Executive Committee of the
IUPUI/Clarian Institutional Review Board approved new criteria for maximum
blood draws at their February 21, 2002 meeting. For adults participating
in a research study, a total blood draw should not exceed 10.5 ml/kg,
the subject's known hemoglobin should be above 12.5, and the subject should
be instructed not to participate in any other blood draws within an 8
week period.

New Neurology and Psychiatry
IRB Study Submission Requirements
Effective April 1, 2002, Neurology
studies involving human subjects will be reviewed at the IUPUI/Clarian
Institutional Review Board-02 meetings and Psychiatry studies involving
human subjects will be reviewed at the IUPUI/Clarian Institutional Review
Board-05 meetings. As a result, the IRB submission dates for the departments
of Neurology and Psychiatry will also change. Neurology studies intended
for review at the April IRB meeting must be received by the Research Compliance
Administration office by the IRB-02 deadline on Friday, March 22, 2002
at noon. Psychiatry studies intended for review at the April IRB meeting
must be received by the Research Compliance Administration office by the
IRB-05 deadline on Monday, April 8, 2002 by noon. More information pertaining

Accountability in
Clinical Research: April 24-26, 2002
The Indiana University School
of Medicine, together with the National Patient Safety Foundation and
13 other convening organizations, invite you to attend a conference April
24 to 26, 2002 in Indianapolis at the University Place Conference Center
entitled Accountability in Clinical Research: Balancing Risk and Benefit.
The program will bring in national authorities in the field of human subjects
research and utilize a mixture of unique presentation formats. This inaugural
conference will examine the funding, management, conduct and accountability
of research involving human subjects from the operational, regulatory
and ethical
perspectives.

New NIH Forms and Instructions
in
Effect
Effective January
10, 2002, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires that the new
PHS 398 and PHS 2590 forms be used for all proposal submissions. In addition
to the new forms, the instructions for completing the forms have also
been revised. Please make sure to download the current version of the
forms each time you submit a proposal. The links to these forms are available

NRSA Stipend Increase
New stipend levels for National Research Service Awards are
in effect for the fiscal year 2002. These rates are applicable for proposals
submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality, and Health Resources Services Administration. For

NIH Increases Salary Limitation
The National Institutes of Health
(NIH) recently announced an increase in the salary cap for grants funded
from FY2002 appropriations. Effective January 1, 2002 the cap was raised
