NEW "FREEDOM FUNDS" ASSISTS IN THE ANTI-TERRORISM EFFORTS

Modified IRB Continuing Review Form
The Research Compliance office has modified the IRB continuing review form that is distributed to investigators for completion at the time of a study's review. Due to the requirements for more detailed reporting to outside agencies, the IRB's are requesting additional information from investigators.

Defining a Sponsored Project Vs. a Gift
A new Indiana University Important Notice, No. 01-4, Defining a Sponsored Project Vs. a Gift, was released on Nov. 20, 2001. The notice outlines the characteristics of sponsored projects and gifts and includes information regarding a resolution process for situations that may arise where the proper classification cannot be readily determined by the guidance provided in the document. What's New at R&SP?
Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP) proudly announces several staff changes.

Research Compliance Administration
Jody Scher has been appointed as the new Assistant Director, Research Compliance Administration. Jody will be handling the day-to-day supervision of the Research Compliance staff.
Vi Abele has accepted the position of Research Compliance Coordinator. Vi comes to R&SP from the Bowen Research Center.

Sponsored Program Administration
Heidi Bredemeyer has accepted the new Contract and Grant Administrator position. Until a replacement is hired for Heidi's previous position as Contract Administrator, Corporate and Industrial/MTA, she will divide her time between the two positions.

Office Administration
JoAnn Pipkin and Brenda Dugan have recently been promoted to Senior Administrative Support Assistants. Both JoAnn and Brenda have assumed expanded duties and provide assistance to our staff and guests.

Resource for IUSM/Clarian Clinical Researchers
General Clinical Research Center is an IU School of Medicine/Clarian resource located on University Hospital 5th floor that supports clinical research. It is open 24 hours/day, 7 days/week and has 10 inpatient and 13 outpatient rooms, laboratory, metabolic kitchen, nurses, dietitians, informatics, and biostatistics. For more information on how to use the Center, contact Sharon Cromer, Administrative Manager, at 278-3446 or scromer2@iupui.edu.

ERA System Update
2001 has been an exciting year for the Electronic Research Administration (ERA) System at Indiana University. The ERA system provides a means to conduct research administration processes and transactions electronically for the IU research community. NCURA Video Conference to Focus on Compliance Issues for Clinical Trials
Research and Sponsored Programs has registered the IUPUI campus for the series of live satellite video conferences sponsored by The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) and invites all who are interested to attend. The second program of this series, Compliance Issues for Clinical Trials, will be January 15, 2002, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the University Library - Lilly Auditorium, Lower Level. R&SP Holiday Closing Information
Research Compliance Administration (IRB/IBC)
The office of Research and Sponsored Programs (UN 618) will be closed December 24, 2001 through January 1, 2002. We will reopen January 2, 2002 at 8:00 A.M. If there is a life-threatening emergency which necessitates the use of an investigational agent, please call University Hospital Pharmacy at 274-0362.

Sponsored Program Administration
The office of Research and Sponsored Programs (UN 618) will be closed December 24, 2001 through January 1, 2002. We will reopen January 2, 2002 at 8:00 A.M. Proposals with a postmark or receipt date of January 2 or earlier must be received by R&SP no later than December 19, 2001. Proposals with a postmark or receipt date of January 3 or 4 must be received no later than December 21, 2001. Proposals will not be processed during the holiday period.

Sponsored Program Development
The office of Research and Sponsored Programs (UL 1140) will be closed December 17, 2001 through January 1, 2002. We will reopen January 2, 2002 at 8:00 A.M.
