NIH Clarifies Stem Cell Funding
On July 12, 2001 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued the following clarification notice concerning the use of NIH funds relevant to human embryonic stem cell derivation:
Investigators are reminded that they may not use NIH direct, indirect, or construction funds for the derivation of human pluripotent cells from human embryos.

Expedited Review Process
Did you know that an expedited review refers to a study that is considered to be of minimal risk? Investigators often mistakenly assume that an expedited review means the IRB study can be turned around and approved within a short period time. "Expedited" refers to the fact that the study is a "minimal risk" study, not requiring review at a full IRB meeting.

New Task Force to Focus on IUPUI/Clarian Operational Procedures
A task force appointed by Dr. Mark Brenner, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education, has been charged with improving IUPUI/Clarian operational procedures. This task force will introduce new standard operating procedures and practices to strengthen the protection of human subjects in research.

NIH Proposal Issues
Announcement #1
In January the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published an announcement concerning the format of grant applications. NIH indicated that applications that did not comply with the specifications for type size, page limits, or margins would be returned without review.

Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP) receives a monthly list from NIH notifying the University of the upcoming non-competing applications and their deadlines. This list is sent approximately two to three months prior to the due date of the proposals.

Revised PHS 398 and PHS 2590 Now Available
The newly revised "Application for a DHHS Public Health Service Grant" (PHS 398, rev. 5/01) and "U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Non-Competing Grant Progress Report" (PHS 2590, rev. 5/01) instructions and forms will be accepted immediately. All applications received on or after January 10, 2002 must use the new forms.

Utility Tunnels to Close in August
Citing safety concerns, the utility tunnels connecting campus buildings on the north side of Michigan Street will be closed to pedestrian traffic beginning August 1, 2001. IUPUI will purchase vehicles, hire additional staff and take other measures to transport aboveground equipment and other materials that are now moved through underground utility tunnels.
