IRB Policy Change Regarding Just-in-Time Procedures
The Just-in-Time procedures, announced by NIH last year, rescind the requirement that IRB approval be obtained within 60 days of proposal submission. NIH now requires that investigators obtain IRB approval when there is evidence that funding will be received.

New adverse event reporting requirements are now in effect. The new requirements clarify the differences between reporting on-site and off-site adverse events.

IUPUI/Clarian Introduces Certification Course on the Protection of Human Subjects in Research
IUPUI/Clarian introduced a new course to assist researchers to fulfill the NIH requirement to demonstrate education on the protection of human research subjects in September 2000. This course offers introductory and advanced material in the ethics of human subjects research on topics ranging from what constitutes a human subject to the details of obtaining IRB approvals. Education/Mentoring for New Department of Medicine Faculty

Early Adopters Use ERA System
The Electronic Research Administration (ERA) system for Indiana University is providing a means to conduct research administration processes and transactions electronically. The ERA Phase 1 electronic routing form is now in use by selected IU departments that agreed to be early adopters.

NIH Requires Human Research Subjects Education
Beginning October 1, 2000, NIH requires investigators involved in research with humans to demonstrate that they have received education on the protection of human research subjects prior to receiving a NIH funding grant or contact. A certification letter and document must be submitted with non-competing applications. Certification for new or competing applications will be requested by NIH once the proposal is reviewed and is determined to be in the fundable range. Indiana University introduces new procedures to assist researchers to meet this requirement.

Department of Medicine Takes the Lead Requiring Human Subjects Education
The Protection of Human Subjects in Research is now mandatory for all Indiana University Department of Medicine employees who have direct contact with patients/subjects during the conduct of research.
