ERA News and Announcements
Planned July Enhancements:
The ERA team is gearing up for the next release of the budget module, which is currently planned for late July. The focus is on delivering a more robust form of a non-agency specific (or "generic") output document and correcting bugs created from the initial release. We are hoping to provide the capability of printing either a low, medium, or high level of detail and have also redesigned the look of the printed form.

Procedure for ERA Access:
To establish an account and gain ERA System Access, please follow the ERAcommunication web address, http://www.indiana.edu/~era/home.html, and choose the System Access link, http://www.indiana.edu/~era/systemAccess.html, then proceed to follow the "procedures for requesting an ERA logon."

Synchronization of Passwords for Central Authentication Service (CAS):
To access the ERA Budget Module, you may need to upgrade your Network ID. All students, faculty, and staff should have used the Password Maintenance utility at least once before December 31, 2001, to prevent login problems to UITS accounts and services, including ERA. If you haven't yet done so, visit the Password Maintenance utility at http://password.iu.edu/. You may either confirm your current network password or set a new one (such as your ERA logon). Using the Password Maintenance utility will upgrade your Network ID; you need to do this because of enhancements in UITS system security and the implementation of Active Directory Services and Global Directory Services. After this is completed, the password you chose will be your password to the Budget Module.

NIH Certificates of Confidentiality
Certificates of Confidentiality may be granted for studies collecting information that if disclosed could have adverse consequences for subjects or damage their financial standing, employability, insurability, or reputation. By protecting researchers and institutions from being compelled to disclose information that would identify research subjects, Certificates of Confidentiality help achieve the research objectives and promote participation in studies by assuring confidentiality and privacy to participants.

As certificates constitute an important tool to protect the privacy of research study participants, NIH encourages their appropriate use. Information on Certificates of Confidentiality is now available on the NIH web site at the CoC Kiosk at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/coc/index.htm.

Faculty are highly encouraged to make an initial, personal approach to a potential funding source. Research and Sponsored Programs, in coordination with the Indiana University Foundation, has resources available to assist faculty and staff in arranging personal contacts and meetings with funding agency representatives. Ann Kratz, Director, Sponsored Program Development, Research and Sponsored Programs, is to be apprised prior to the initial contact with a private foundation or corporation.

Each time extramural funds are requested, a unique set of circumstances exists. These may include the availability of time, the type of project, the peculiarities of the funding source, and the resources available to the project director. Consequently, there is no single, ideal, foolproof method that can be prescribed for approaching a potential sponsor. The handout, Points to Consider: Should I approach this agency?, can be a useful tool in making those decisions.

A second handout, Approaching The Funding Agency, provides some general suggestions about the process that may be helpful. The suggestions are neither all encompassing nor guaranteed to work. They are simply suggestions, which have proven helpful in the past. Research and Sponsored Programs staff can be consulted for further suggestions to be used in special situations.
