HRPP Receives Full AAHRPP Accreditation In the April edition of the “R&SP Communicator”, we announced that IUPUI’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) received qualified accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP). The June edition communicated the revisions to the Institutional Review Board's (IRB) policies & procedures and associated IRB forms based on that accreditation process. IUPUI’s HRPP recently received FULL accreditation, which necessitated a few additional minor changes to some of the IRB’s policies & procedures and associated IRB forms. To view the revisions, see Complete Details New Guidance for Submitting an Updated Clinical Investigator Brochure (CIB) to the IRB The Office of Research Compliance Administration is offering new guidance for investigators who have an update to a CIB which must be reported to the Institutional Review Board (IRB). In an effort to streamline reporting processes for investigators, these updates will now be reported to the IRB via an amendment. Complete Details Internal Guidance for Registration of Clinical Research Studies The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) has stated that they will consider a trial for publication only if it has been registered in an acceptable public registry before the enrollment of the first patient. To assist Indiana University School of Medicine Clinical Researchers, an internal guidance document "REGISTRATION of CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDIES" has been prepared and placed on the Clinical Trials Program Web site: http://medicine.iupui.edu/ctp/Registry.htm. Announces Plans to Transition to the SF424 Application and Electronic
Submission through Grants.gov The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced plans to transition to the SF424 application, which will ultimately replace the PHS 398 forms, and to implement electronic submission through Grants.gov by individual research program/funding mechanism. Applications in response to Funding Opportunity Announcements will require electronic submission through Grants.gov. Complete Details 2006 NIH Loan Repayment Program Announced Starting Thursday, September 1, 2005, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) began accepting applications for its five Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). The five LRPs offered by the NIH include the Clinical Research LRP, Clinical Research LRP for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds, Contraception and Infertility Research LRP, Health Disparities LRP, and Pediatric Research LRP. Through these programs, the NIH offers to repay up to $35,000 annually of the qualified educational debt of health professionals pursuing careers in biomedical and behavioral research. The programs also provide coverage for federal and state tax liabilities. Complete Details NIH Announces Plans to Eliminate Mailing of Paper Notifications: Summary Statements & Peer Review Outcome Letters The National Institutes of Health (NIH) continues towards its goal of a paperless grants process through the elimination of the following notifications which are currently sent in hard copy: Summary Statements and Peer Review Outcome Letters. Instead, investigators are instructed to use the eRA Commons, a Web interface where NIH and the applicant organizations are able to conduct extramural research administration business electronically. In addition, the e-mail address of rspinfo@iupui.edu has been replaced with srsinfo@iupui.edu. Please note that inquiries sent to the old e-mail address will continue to be monitored. In order to ensure there are no delays in processing your request, however, please update your contact lists and files with the new information. Central Indiana Community Foundation Applications Effective immediately, applications to the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) can be processed through the Indiana University Foundation. The only exception to this policy is the CICF Library Fund which should continue to be routed through Sponsored Research Services (SRS). Questions concerning this announcement can be directed to Michelle Artmeier, Director of Proposal Services, 317.278.8644. New IU Mileage Reimbursement Rates IU Travel Management Services has published new mileage reimbursement rates. Please begin using these new rates effective September 1, 2005 on proposal budgets for submission to external agencies for funding. Staff Nominated for the United Way Leadership Program IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz has nominated three prominent faculty and staff members to participate in the United Way of Central Indiana’s community leadership programs. Yaobin Chen, Associate Dean for Research and Acting Chair and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology; NiCole Keith, Assistant Professor, School of Physical Education and Tourism Management; and Etta Ward, Director, Scholarly and Creative Activity Program / Sponsored Program Development Research and Sponsored Programs/Office for Professional Development, joined a select group of 51 community leaders invited to take part in the leadership programs. The programs kicked-off with an orientation and reception sponsored by Citizens Gas on Sept. 28. Scientists and Subjects is a unique and innovative Internet-based seminar designed for busy researchers and research administrators who are concerned with the responsible conduct of research with human subjects. The seminar is open to junior and senior researchers, members of Institutional Review Boards and other administrators, and college and university faculty members who teach future researchers.
