Mark L. Brenner, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education, has announced his plans to leave IUPUI on August 31, 2005 to become the Vice President for Research and the Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). Brenner has led the Office for Research and Graduate Education through a remarkable seven years of growth and successfully countered internal and external changes. Emotions are running high these days for the staff of Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP) as they prepare to say goodbye to Mark Brenner. The staff of R&SP wishes Brenner well in his new position at UNR but is taking time to reflect on his legacy of achievement, too.Complete Details |

New Policies and Procedures for Reporting Unanticipated Problems Involving Risks to Subjects or Others and Noncompliance Effective Sept 1 In the June edition of the R&SP Communicator, Research Compliance Administration (RCA) announced new policies and procedures related to the reporting of unanticipated problems involving risks to subjects or others and noncompliance. Much feedback was received during the public comment period regarding these policies and procedures and associated forms. As a result, revisions were made to the documents. Complete Details Online Adverse Event System Obsolete The development of the Reporting and Unanticipated Problems Involving Risks to Subjects or Others and Noncompliance IUPUI/Clarian Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) necessitated reporting changes that make the online adverse event system obsolete. On September, 1, 2005, the online Adverse Event Reporting System will become inactive. However, adverse events already submitted through that system will be processed as usual. The new reporting form may be accessed from the RCA Downloadable IRB-Human Subjects Instruction Packet and Forms Web page: http://www.iupui.edu/%7Eresgrad/spon/download2.htm. Reminder: New Summary Safeguard Statement Operative September 1 Beginning September 1, 2005, Research Compliance Administration (RCA) requires that investigators utilize the revised Summary Safeguard Statement (SSS) form (v 6/05) for any study(s) that is or will be enrolling human subjects. The new SSS form may be accessed from the RCA Downloadable IRB-Human Subjects Instruction Packet and Forms Web page: http://www.iupui.edu/%7Eresgrad/spon/download2.htm. Any new study submission received in the RCA office for review in a September IRB meeting (or later) not utilizing this new version of the SSS will be returned and may delay the review of the research study. IRB Documents to be Stamped Research Compliance Administration (RCA) is offering a list of what documents will receive an approval stamp by their office once reviewed by the IRB to promote consistency. In general, the IRB must review any item that will be viewed by potential or enrolled subjects. As a result, investigators submit to the IRB informed consents, advertisements, letters to subjects, surveys, questionnaires, etc. However, despite the fact that the IRB must review these documents, not all of the documents require an approval stamp to validate the IRB’s evaluation.
