Dr. Peruski, who is with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Indiana University School of Medicine, Northwest Center for Medical Education, shares the following information about the focus of the BHC and its role in providing guidance for projects that use these agents: “Anyone who works on microorganisms that may infect humans and any other biohazardous agent that does not have a recombinant DNA component must submit a study to this Committee. The BHC is keenly aware of the many compliance issues surrounding research projects at IUPUI; however, the BHC should not be viewed as an impediment to research. While our primary function is to review research proposals that will use such pathogens, our goal is to also provide guidance, resources, and information to investigators and their staffs that are conducting research using pathogenic microorganisms, biological toxins, or any other biohazardous material. In addition, the activities of this committee will help the campus and the University determine the extent and scope of scientific endeavors involving pathogenic microorganisms. Given the increased level of oversight and regulation of legitimate scientific studies involving these agents at the Federal, State, and in some instances, local levels, the BHC hopes to ease concerns of those conducting the research and provide the campus with advice and oversight regarding those studies.” The Research Compliance Biosafety & Biohazard web site http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/rescom_ibc_menu.htm features important resources including the following:
Please share this information with the faculty and staff of your respective departments. The BHC intends to further expand and refine their web resources over the coming months and welcomes suggestions and constructive criticism of their efforts. For questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Peruski (lperuski@iun.edu); James Klenner (jklenner@iupui.edu), BHC Vice-Chair and institutional Biosafety Officer; and/or the staff of Research Compliance Administration (resrisk@iupui.edu).New IRB Forms Now Available Many of you have consulted with the Research Compliance Administration office, as well as the Compliance Office in the School of Medicine, for assistance in adequately responding to these added questions. From that, revisions have been made to the summary safeguard statement, Recruitment Checklist and Release of Health Information Authorization forms. We hope the revisions make it easier in answering the questions and using the forms. The information in these forms essentially did not change; rather, how the information was presented changed. For this reason, it will NOT be necessary for you to update to this version of the forms (08/03) if you are currently using an (03/03) version or later*. However, for future study submissions, only the 08/03 version of the forms will be available from our website. * There are special circumstances (e.g. studies permanently closed to new subject enrollment) that do not require current versions of the forms. See continuing review form for explanation of these circumstances. If you have any questions, please call the Research Compliance Administration office at 274-8289. |
