Update On October 1 Deadline – Feedback Requested
Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP) would like to thank everyone who submitted proposals early for the October 1 deadline. In the month of September, R&SP processed 213 proposals and 112 miscellaneous documents such as budget revisions, time extensions, and additional information requested by funding agencies. Of these, 94 had an October 1 deadline and 20 had deadlines of September 29 or 30. Eighty-four proposals were submitted to the National Institutes of Health and 51 proposals submitted to the Clarian Values Fund. Complete 2002 Comparison Details

In order to deal with the heavy volume of proposals normally submitted for the October 1 deadline, R&SP tested a new routing procedure. Investigators were allowed to route the administrative and fiscal portions of their proposals separately from the program narrative. The narrative section was then added just prior to shipping of the proposal. This allowed R&SP to proceed with their review while investigators completed the scientific sections. Twenty-two investigators took advantage of this option. R&SP would like feedback from investigators and their staff about this process. Comments should be sent to Pam McKeough, Director of Sponsored Program Administration, at pmckeoug@iupui.edu.

R&SP Annual Report Now Available
Selected tables from Research and Sponsored Programs (R&SP) were published in the prior issue of the R&SP Communicator. The full report is now available at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/reportscontent2.htm.

Updated Important Notice
The following Indiana University Important Notice was recently updated and reissued: #03-6 Routing of Sponsored Projects Documents for the Indianapolis Campus, IUPU Columbus, and the Regional Centers for Medical Education http://www.fms.indiana.edu/cg/imp_notice/03-6.asp.

New NSF Proposal Guidelines
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has published a revised Grant Proposal Guide (NSF 04-2) effective for proposals submitted on or after October 1, 2003. The most recent revisions concern the Small Grants for Exploratory Research (SGER) Program. The Guide can be accessed at http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf042. Those preparing proposals to NSF should be sure to review the changes and follow all new instructions.

NIH Issues Exception to Policy on Submission of Revised Applications
Current National Institutes of Health (NIH) policy allows a proposal to be submitted for consideration only three times (the original submission and two revisions). Because of the reorganization of the Integrated Review Groups and their study sections, NIH will allow a third revision to be submitted if it meets specific criteria. For additional details, see the NIH announcement at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-03-065.html.
