NIH Salary Cap Increased
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) restricts the salary for an individual paid from a grant, cooperative agreement, or contract. Effective January 1, 2003, the salary cap increased from $166,700 to $171,900. For further information see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-03-027.html.
Mileage Reimbursement Changed
Effective January 1, 2003, the Indiana University mileage reimbursement rate was reduced to $.36 per mile. Additional details can be found at http://www.indiana.edu/~travel/car.html.
Resubmission of NIH Applications
The National Institutes of Health announced a change in policy concerning the resubmission of unfunded applications. This change affects proposals that were originally submitted in response to an RFA or investigator-initiated proposals that are being resubmitted with a different funding mechanism (for example, an unsolicited application originally submitted as an R01 but resubmitted as an R21). This change in policy is effective for proposals submitted on or after May 10, 2003. For full details, see http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-03-019.html.
NIH Receipt Date Policy
For clarification of the National Institutes of Health policy on receipt of applications and a full listing of the standard deadline dates, please see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/submissionschedule.htm.

On January 24, 2003, Dr. Rita Colwell, Director, National Science Foundation (NSF), signed Important Notice 128, entitled “Revision of the NSF Cost Sharing Policy.” This Important Notice provides new guidance regarding cost sharing in proposals submitted to NSF. The Notice and a FAQs document may be viewed at http://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dga/policy/start.htm.
NSF Returns Proposals for Noncompliance with Format Requirements
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is strictly enforcing proposal guidelines and has returned proposals without review where guidelines were not followed exactly. The proposal submission guidelines are published in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (NSF 03-2) which is available at http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?gpg.
