IUPUI offers options for English language study through three different centers. Please contact the centers directly for further information about their programs.
Pre-Admission Intensive English Language Study
ELS Language Centers, a private, independent program housed at IUPUI offers full-time, intensive English language study, with sessions beginning every four weeks throughout the year. ELS issues I-20s to facilitate student visas for English language study. It is not necessary to apply to IUPUI in order to study at ELS; however, students who also wish to study at IUPUI should submit an application for admission to IUPUI as early as possible. Acceptance by ELS does not guarantee acceptance into an IUPUI program.
ELS students may be able to use their successful ELS study to meet IUPUI’s English proficiency requirement for admission, instead of taking the TOEFL:
Undergraduate Study: If you are applying for an undergraduate program at IUPUI, you may submit ELS Intensive Level 109 Certificate of Completion instead of taking the TOEFL.
Graduate Study: Some IUPUI graduate programs accept successful completion of ELS Intensive Level 112 in place of the TOEFL. Contact ELS Language Centers or the Office of International Affairs to find out if this option is available for the program to which you plan to apply.
EAP Courses for IUPUI Students
IUPUI’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program provides semi-intensive English language instruction for students beginning their academic program at IUPUI, to help develop their English proficiency for successful academic study. All students admitted to IUPUI who are not native speakers of English take the IUPUI EAP Placement Test administered by this program, including students who have studied at the ELS Language Center at IUPUI. Based on the results of the test, students needing further language support enroll in IUPUI EAP courses appropriate for their level of English proficiency while taking academic subject area courses.
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Training
The Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication (ICIC) in the IUPUI
Department of English offers short courses in English for specific purposes for groups or
individuals. Specialized training courses meet the particular language
and communication needs of academics and professionals from the
community and overseas. These courses are designed for clients such as
nonnative English speaking business and government officials,
postdoctoral research scientists, language teachers, and student groups
with specific disciplinary focuses.
