Course descriptions

It is important that you send us course descriptions for the subjects appearing on your transcript to establish your eligibility for transfer credit. Without course descriptions, we cannot determine how the courses you have completed may equate to courses taught at IUPUI.

Wherever possible, please provide course descriptions in one of the following formats:

  • Pages copied from an official “course catalog” or official web site listing courses offered by your school. These course descriptions may be brief, from three to five sentences long. They should summarize the content of the course and the topics to be covered.
  • A copy of a course syllabus, normally a longer document that describes the course in detail and the topics covered during the course.

If you cannot provide English language course descriptions from your school, you may provide the original language copy and provide a three- to five-line summary translation of the course content.

Understanding the Transfer Credit Evaluation Process
IUPUI grants transfer credit for postsecondary-level course work that you have successfully completed at an accredited or officially recognized college, university, or other institution of higher education. To be eligible for transfer credit for a course, you must have received a final grade of at least “C” or the equivalent as determined by the Office of International Affairs.

Transfer credit evaluations are prepared when an admission decision has been made. For courses completed outside the United States, transfer credit is awarded on a course-by-course basis up to a maximum of 30 semester hours of credit for each academic year of full-time attendance. Remedial courses and English as a second language (ESL) courses do not transfer. Credit for English language courses in grammar and composition cannot be given if the course was taken in a country where English is not the predominant native language.

Degree requirements differ from country to country and from school to school within the same country. Upon arrival, you will likely find that some of your course work from other colleges cannot be used to fulfill your degree requirements at IUPUI. This may occur even though the credits have transferred. When you arrive on campus, you will meet with your academic adviser, and the appropriate departments will assess course equivalence. After course equivalence has been determined, your academic advisor will be able to assist you in determining your remaining requirements for completing your degree at IUPUI.

Business majors. U.S. business degree program accreditation requirements restrict the granting of transfer credit for business courses. You may be eligible for some limited business transfer credit, but the majority of business course content for your degree will need to be completed at IUPUI. Transfer of elective courses in other subject areas is still possible.

Nursing majors. IUPUI nursing degree program requirements restrict the granting of transfer credit for nursing courses. You may be eligible for some limited nursing transfer credit, but due to academic residency requirements the majority of nursing course content for your degree will need to be completed at IUPUI. Transfer of elective courses in other subject areas is still possible.
