IUPUI normally requires evidence of English language proficiency, such as a TOEFL score, for all non-native English speakers prior to admission. This pre-admission requirement is waived for Non-Degree Seeking applicants. However, these students whose native language is not English are required to take the IUPUI English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Placement Test during the first semester of study to be eligible for continued enrollment.
IUPUI English proficiency policy for Graduate or Undergraduate Non-Degree Program applicants who are non-native speakers of English
Satisfactory English language skills are necessary for enrollment as a graduate non-degree student. Non-native English speakers must take the IUPUI EAP Test unless they have received a U.S. bachelor's or higher degree or if their degree was earned in a country where English is the native language. They may also be exempt if they can provide a transcript from a U.S. university showing one of the following items.
- the equivalent of IUPUI’s W131 (Elementary Composition) with a grade of B or better
- two or more English writing or composition courses with a grade of B or better in each course (for the purpose of demonstrating English proficiency under this policy, composition courses must be transferable to IUPUI at the W131 level or higher).
Graduate Non-Degree: Individual schools and programs may have policies for documentation of English ability that differ from the GND policy.
If you anticipate pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree at IUPUI, you are encouraged to take the EAP Placement test even if it is not required for Non-degree admission. The EAP Placement test is required for undergraduate international admission. In addition, your graduate academic unit will most likely require it at a later date.
EAP TEST REQUIREMENT: Non-degree students are given a grace period of one semester in which to satisfy the testing requirement. If you are subject to this policy, you must take the ESL test before registration for a second semester will be permitted. To register for the test, you must:
- Submit an application
- Know your University ID#
- Call the Testing Center at 317-264-2620 to arrange a test date and time
- Take to the Testing Center the day of the test: your admission letter, your picture ID and pay the $30.00 registration fee (by cash, check or money order).
EXEMPTIONS: To receive an exemption from the ESL test requirement under the terms of this policy, you must:
- submit a transcript from a university in a country where English is the predominant native language showing relevant English composition course work with satisfactory grade or degree completed OR
- complete and submit the Request for Exemption from ESL Testing form. The Office of International Affairs will evaluate your request and will notify you if you are required to take the EAP Placement test.
Documents can be faxed to (317) 278-2213.
If you wish to enroll in EAP courses, you must take the EAP placement test before course registration to determine your EAP course placement level.
