Visiting
Scholars and International Interns
In the past six years, more than 15 linguists from
around the world have been visiting scholars at ICIC, IUPUI and
interacted with IUPUI faculty and students. The ICIC Visiting Scholar
Program provides opportunities for research in applied linguistics,
intercultural communication, and English for Specific Purposes.
VISITING SCHOLARS
Dr. Kenichi Namai, August-December 2006

Dr. Namai is an associate professor at Waseda University in Japan, teaching English and linguistics in the School of Science & Engineering and the School of International Liberal Studies.
Dr. Srikant Sarangi, October-November 2005
Dr. Sarangi is a professor in language and communication in the
School of English at Cardiff
University, Wales and Director of the Health
and Communication Centre.
Mª Pilar Mur Dueñas, June-September 2005
Mª Pilar Mur Dueñas is a research scholarship holder
at the Department of English and German Philology at the University
of Zaragoza, Spain. Her research here included work on her PhD
dissertation, which focuses on the cross-cultural analysis of business
management research articles written in English and in Spanish.
During her time at ICIC she attended ICIC's ESP Institute, Think
Tank on Health Discourse, and presented a paper and poster at the
2nd ICIC Conference on Intercultural Rhetoric and Written
Discourse Analysis.
Dr. Miguel Ruiz Garrido, June-August 2005
Dr. Ruiz-Garrido works at the Department of English Studies at
the Universitat Jaume I, Spain.
He teaches English Language as well as ESP,
mainly English for Business Communication. He is a member of the
research group GRAPE. Dr.
Ruiz-Garrido spent his time here attending the ESP Institute and
Think Tank on Health Discourse, presenting a paper at the 2nd ICIC Conference on Intercultural Rhetoric and Written Discourse
Analysis, and conducting his own research and writing. Dr. Ruiz-Garrido
also worked on proposals for future projects in cooperation
with ICIC.
Dr. Ania Saorín Iborra, August 2005

Dr. Saorín-Iborra works at the Department of English Studies
at the Universitat Jaume I, Spain,
as well as in a secondary school in the same city. At the university,
she teaches ESP, mainly in business-related
fields. She is a member of the research group GRAPE.
While at ICIC, Dr. Saorín-Iborra conducted her own research,
wrote research articles, and worked on course materials for
doctoral and master classes that she teaches.
Dr. Sofija Micic, Fulbright Scholar, September 2004-January
2005
Dr. Micic is Associate Professor of English in the School of
Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. While here
she is conducting research on a contrastive pragmatic analysis of
medical terms in English and Serbian.

Dr. Dwight Atkinson, July 2004, December 2004, July 2005
Dr. Atkinson is an applied linguist at Purdue University. His research has
appeared in such journals as Applied Linguistics, Language in Society,
TESOL Quarterly, Modern Language Journal, and Journal of Second
Language Writing. His current research involves the role of English
in higher education in India and a book on theories of culture for
TESOL and Applied Linguistics. He has been an annual visitor at
ICIC..
Lorena Suaréz Tejerina, July-December 2004
Ms. Suaréz Tejerina was a Ph.D. student from the Universidad
de León, Spain. While here she attended the Contrastive
and Intercultural Rhetoric Institute and the Written Discourse and
Contrastive Rhetoric Conference where she presented "The Role
of Evaluation at the Macro-Structural Level: A Corpus of English
and Spanish Book Reviews Submitted to a Contrastive Study,"
which relates to her thesis.

Dr. Ana Moreno, July 2002
During the summer of 2002, Professor Ana Moreno of the Departmento
de Filologia Moderna, Universidad
de León, Spain was a visiting scholar at ICIC. She presented
two lectures and worked with the ICIC faculty and staff on a number
of research projects.
INTERNS
Inka Lehtinen, Summer 2007
Ms. Lehtinen, a M.A. student at Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland, came to ICIC to complete her language practice, which is part of her degree. As an intern at ICIC she assisted in the Tsuda-ICIC program and ESP Institute, conducted literature reviews, and did editing work for upcoming articles and books (Contrastive rhetoric: Reaching to intercultural rhetoric, Connor, Nagelhout, & Rozycki, in press; Discourse on the move, Connor, Upton, & Biber, in press; From contrastive to intercultural rhetoric, Connor, manuscript in preparation).
Marie Eriksson, Summer 2006
Ms. Eriksson came to ICIC from Åbo Akademi University to complete a language practice, which is part of her M.A. degree. As an intern at ICIC she worked with corpus research, and assisted with ICIC's panel on immigration in Indiana. She also assisted in the Tsuda-ICIC program and gave a presentation on her experiences working, studying and living in the US to the Tsuda students.
Jennica Haga, Summer 2005
Ms. Haga, a M.A. student at Åbo
Akademi University in Turku, Finland, assisted ICIC with its
new English Training for Postdoctoral program and the annual Intercultural
Rhetoric and Written Discourse Analysis conference over the summer.
She presented a poster at the conference on her thesis-in-progress,
Scots in Scotland.
Mirva Lehtonen, Summer 2004
Ms. Lehtonen came to ICIC from Åbo
Akademi University to complete part of the English language
component for her M.A. degree. While here she attended the Contrastive
and Intercultural Rhetoric Institute and submitted a poster on English-language
email discourse for the Written Discourse and Contrastive Rhetoric
Conference.
Yvonne Westergård, Summer 2004
Ms. Westergård came to ICIC from
Åbo Akademi University to complete part of the English
language component for her M.A. degree. She split her time here
between ICIC and the dean's office in the School of Liberal Arts.
Petra Lillia, Summer 2003
Ms.Lillia came to ICIC from Åbo
Akademi University to complete part of the English language
component for her M.A. degree. During her two-month internship she
assisted in a number of ICIC activities and helped with editing
tasks for a forthcoming book edited by Dr. Connor. She also gave
a presentation concerning the differences between Finnish and U.S.
elementary education. Ms. Lillia is now teaching first grade in
Finland.
Åsa Westlin, Summer 2002
Ms. Westlin came to ICIC from Åbo
Akademi University to complete part of the English language
component for her M.A. degree and to learn more about applied corpus
linguistics. During her two-month internship she assisted in a number
of ICIC activities. She also gave three presentations concerning
her M.A. thesis on gender differences and gestures among Finnish
teachers of English.
