WELCOME to the Department of History at Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI). The Department is committed to quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We offer a variety of options for undergraduate majors and minors in history, for students who need history classes for their own majors, and for those who are looking for an interesting elective. The department regularly offers classes in U.S. history, European history, and non-U.S./non-European. We have colleagues who are especially strong in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The department is proud of its close working relationships with many other programs on campus, including the School of Education, University College, the Center for American Studies, African-American/African Studies, and Women's studies.
The Department offers Masters-level graduate concentrations in U.S. History, European History, and Public History. The mission of the Public History track is to train good historians who can practice their craft in a variety of off-campus settings, such as museums, historic sites, libraries, archives, and government agencies. The department offers a range of funding opportunities for graduate students, which are listed and described in the Graduate section of this web site.
The Department prides itself on having faculty who are committed to student learning and to quality scholarship. Faculty in the department teach at all levels, and they all publish. Many of the colleagues enjoy national and international reputations as scholars. Their success as scholars directly benefits the students who enroll in their classes.
IUPUI is a large, urban campus adjacent to downtown Indianapolis. The university combines a campus environment with many advantages and opportunities associated with being at the heart of Indiana's capital city. Within walking distance, you will find the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana State Museum, both of which are housed in new, state-of-art facilities. The Eiteljorg Museum of Western and Indian Art, which has broken ground for a major new addition. IUPUI students, faculty, and staff enjoy free admission to the Eiteljorg. Also very near the campus are the Indiana State Library, the Indiana State Archives, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, and the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.
The Department also has a strong record of success when it comes to working with related programs and organizations on campus and in the community. We have long-standing, relationships with most of the cultural resources institutions in the city. We also enjoy close working partnerships with the Frederick Douglass Papers, the Charles S. Peirce Papers, the Santayana Edition, the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, the Polis Center, and the IUPUI Museum Studies program. These connections create opportunities for our students for research, for service learning, and for paid graduate internships.
We hope that the information on this web site will introduce you to the excitement and variety associated with the study of history. Please feel welcome to contact us if we can provide additional information.
