This initiative, funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of General Medical Science, represents a formal partnership between Jackson State University (JSU), an historically black institution and Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI). The purpose of the partnership is to enhance the quality and quantity of underrepresented minority students who are being trained as the next generation of scientist. |
The specific acceptance criteria and set points for admission to the Bridges Program includes success in JSU coursework as indicated with a GPA above 3.0, strong letters of evaluation by faculty familiar with the student’s academic coursework or research activities, and successful progress by the student on his/her research project. The committee agreed that students should take the GRE, but decided the score should only be used as an indicator with there being no threshold score used for admission decisions. |
Students are not obligated to attend IUPUI. However, we will encourage them to apply. Our goal is to see all the Bridges students enrolled in a PhD program. Of course, we realize that not everyone will like Indianapolis or that IU may not have the perfect match with a given student’s goals. Applications to medical school are discouraged unless it is for a combined degree student who is admitted and enrolled and expects to begin doctoral portion of his/her program first. |
Bridges students will be paid by JSU during the academic year at the rate of $12,750. In addition all of their fees will be paid. When in Indianapolis during the 3 months in the summer they will receive a stipend of $1,667 per month, health insurance, and fees paid. Their apartment will be paid by the IUPUI Graduate School. Roundtrip Travel, registration and per diem to scientific meetings will be paid by the Bridges grant.
